I’ve just made the mistake of jumping to Bluehost and now i’m being told all of the things they won’t do where as before I was told of all the the things they would.
But I have to ask why would you recommend Hostgator when it’s owned by the same guy?
Hi CineSight. Hostgator isn’t owned by Bluehost; Hostmonster is. If you’re looking to avoid all of the problems that come with Bluehost, you’ll want to avoid Hostmonster the same way
Thanks for this site it has helped me a lot in deciding to avoid BlueHost like the plague. I can only imagine they are paying review sites well in order to get recommended, because they are the number one recommended hosting on most hosting review sites! But even more serious is that they are recommended so highly by WordPress and that had me hovering over the BlueHost sign up button. But a gut feeling had me doing a last minute check and led me to this site. Thanks!
Software vendor Carina Software has been hit by Bluehosts’ terms of service for having too many people interested in their software:
“At approximately 6:20 AM PDT this morning, we recieved a call from our web-hosting provider, bluehost.com, asking us to suspend the one-cent download offer for our Voyager and SkyGazer desktop software. Demand was so high that our automated serial-number generator, which emails serial numbers to customers, was sending out several thousand emails per hour – putting us in violation of our Terms of Service (TOS) agreement, and causing our email service to be suspended.”
They cut my site because they told me that my accoun expires for non payment.
So I show them that my payment is good for more thant 8 months (aprox), and they change the reason for another like I make some technical problem whit my site.
Well the thing is: They told me a reason in first instance. They know that they made a mistake and then try to find another reason.
I guess I can take this case to judge and maybe get some paymente for the error of bluehost.com
Can you tell me if there´s some option here????
I´m not in USA, I´m in Bolivia, but I guess the law can help me in this case.
I have all the mails and proofs of the mistake of bluehost.com
Would you like to help me and other victims to fight against Bluehost,
we need a leader who is American knowing the better way to suit them.
Thanks,
Samuel
This is the rule they set AFTER you had hooked up…
7.02. BlueHost.Com employs complex mechanisms to protect its Subscribers and systems from abuse. BlueHost.Com’s offering of “unlimited” services is not intended to allow the actions of a single or few Subscribers to unfairly or adversely impact the experience of other Subscribers. … However, in order to ensure a consistent and quality experience for all Subscribers, BlueHost.Com does place automated safeguards to protect against any one site growing too quickly and adversely impacting the system until BlueHost.Com can evaluate said sites resource needs.
Wow, a little biased and angry aren’t we. I can definitely see in some of your site postings who you recommend and even wonder if you guys were fired from Bluehost or work for another company to slander them. Your little disclaimer about free speech is a load of crap and only gives you a right to gripe. I have clients that use Bluehost, GoDaddy and HostGator and will also say that I alone have my site on Bluehost (as amateur as it may be). I am having trouble right now with GoDaddy but have never once had a problem with Bluehost and when I call them for support because I have a question at anytime during the day, they answer in less than 5 minutes and help me the best they can. That is satisfactory in my book by a long shot and I have so much content and plugins, it should have went down by now but it hasn’t. Just a little more information about you and your “information” site, all “hosting companies” have troubles. They all go down at some time or another. That’s just life pal. Heck, even Facebook and Twitter hit the bricks. However, I have had more success with Bluehost and Host Gator than anyone. You just created an “I suck” page. I could do one of these websites about anything…hamburgers, pizza, buildings, the freakin’ sky, and get thousands of comments saying why they think it sucks. That’s not progress, it’s just reversing Darwin’s theory. The problem here is not that Bluehost sucks, but that you can’t let go of a few simple inadequacies in your little world. BTW, just to give you a little heads up, I tried to click on your “about” and “hosting recommendations”, and three times were told that the pages couldn’t be found. Wow, thanks for your insight, knowledge and expertise on the subject at hand. There’s your 1st amendment.
Thank you SO MUCH for this website!!! After getting royally screwed in other (non-hosting) internet purchases and services, I’ve gotten into the habit of googling “X complaints” and “X sucks” and “X bad experiences” despite the fact that it’s the #1 listing (in a different color!) on the Wordpress site. I’m SO glad I found this site before investing any money. As far as you having an axe to grind–pshaw. I’ve been on the internet long enough to know that it’s really obvious when one person has an unsubstatiated problem with a company/seller and when dozens of people are filing the same types of complaints over and over again. I’m quite sure that Bluehost has many happy customers. I’m just not willing to take the chance that I won’t be one of them.
See this discussion — Bluehost shut down a website without warning to the owner when a big company complained, and then turned over information about the owner without notice to the registrant, while comparing its customers “felons and crooks.” (Judge has ruled in favor of the customers)
I have been with them since 2006 & recently they have been nothing but problems! I found this post while searching for a new hosting company and couldn’t resist putting in my two cents.
1. I had too many files on the server and had to delete some or my account would be deleted in 14 days. (not allowed over 50,000 files which includes individual email files)
2. I had too many SQL Databases & they SHUT DOWN MY SITE WITHOUT EVEN CONTACTING ME! (I don’t remember how many I had, but it was less than 50). They claimed that I had “too many tables”.
I only host 5 websites one of which is an online store and the others are just very basic Joomla sites. Two of which I don’t even use.
I’m leaving Bluehost as soon as I find a new hosting company & if Hostgator is the same company… NOT going there either!
If Bluehost is going to treat a customer of FIVE YEARS without ANY I mean NO problems prior to a couple of months ago the way that I have been treated… I can only imagine how they are going to treat others!
I’m open to suggestions on other hosting companies… Thanks…
I would have to agree. They are terrible. I have been having nothing but problems with them for the last couple of years. Been a customer since 2006 as well. I think their adverting is misleading (Unlimited Storage / Data Transfer, etc). I would be very interested in forming a class action suit against them.
Reading all these comments sends shivers to my spine. I am also at tether with Bluehost. I really like Bluehost especially their customer service, however recently my account has been throttled for no apparent reason. Most of my domains are parked and I have 2 active domains one of which has not more than 200 absolute visitors per month.
What’s confusing is a lot of forums and blogs seem to have switched in favour of Hostgator, but I had a quick chat with them yesterday and I can confirm that they too throttle accounts. This is what I was told and I quote ” We only throttle processor speed for shared accounts and this 25% of the processors on the server for a max of 15 minutes”.
This is exactly what Bluehost and Hostmonster does doesn’t it? So what’s the big deal with Hostgator? I am at cross-paths should I remain with Bluehost or find an alternative?

The worst of all possible events just happened. Bluehost lost all my data, from 3 years of work.
3 years of stuff…websites, audio, video, pictures, programs, notes, records, web work. All gone. They “had a problem with the box last night” and they were “really sorry”. No backups either, from their “Courtesy Backup” scheme. Nothing from last night, last week or last month.
All my stuff is lost for eternity.
The most basic service a host provider can offer is to keep your stuff when you store it on their hard drives. Didn’t happen.
I can’t believe what I am hearing. I am a webdeveloper and ALL of my clients are on Bluehost and Hostmonster. They have been consistently excellent over the last 4 years. I have zero complaints. Their customer support is the best. You think GoDaddy is better?! Good grief. I have filed multiple ICANN complaints aginst GoDaddy for illegal and unethical practices. You BlueHost bashers must have ulterior motives. You probably work for HostGator because everything you said about Bluehost is untrue. I work with them every single day. I know whereof I speak. You obviously do not.
They got me today. 1000 table limit, they just started enforcing. So basically you can have no more then 11 joomla sites or maybe 60 wordpress sites. This was out of the blue, 3 days notice. Hardly unlimited. If the limit was 2000 or higher I could understand.
Has anybody has has any experience with BlueLayerHost???
At the moment I am with InMotion and as the support has been great, the prices aren´t always as friendly for a small business.
Love to hear your comments.

Bluehost has yet to respond to this criticism, but the company that got Bluehost to kick its customers in the teeth has this to say (see the update) http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0511/Caving_to_Koch.html
